Speech at the Victory Day Reception, 07.09.2015

Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

We are commemorating today our Victory Day, in the friendly and allied nation of the Portuguese Republic. I thank you all for your presence.

Regrettably, our commemoration today has been overshadowed by the atrocious terrorist attack in Dağlıca, Hakkari in Turkey perpetrated by the PKK terrorist organization which claimed 16 innocent lives and wounded 6 others yesterday.

Thus our event this evening, to mark the 30th of August, the day on which our National Struggle for Independence culminated in the liberation of our territory 93 years ago, is taking place in a very solemn context.

The 30th of August marked not only a major military victory in the battlefield, but also an important milestone towards the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, which would follow on 29 October 1923. I hope to celebrate with you our National Day on the 29th of October, which will be the 92th anniversary of the establishment of our Republic.

On this Victory Day, I would like to pay tribute and homage with great gratitude and respect to the honourable memory of all our martyrs and veterans, and above all to Atatürk, the great commander of our national struggle and the founder of the Republic of Turkey, as well as his companions in arms.

I pay a special tribute to our 16 martyrs who fell victim to the despicable act of terrorism yesterday.

I would also like to say a few words in Turkish to our Turkish Community present here tonight.
